I have an 89 240 w/ an auto transmission. When I move it from park to drive or reverse or any gear, it does nothing. I can hear the idle change a little, but the car doesn't move. I checked underneath and the linkage is connected. What else could it be?

Thanks!

E-brake is on :)

Just kidding... could be that the torque converter is shot, or possibly the transmission itself.

Hey, mine is a 89 coupe too!

Thanks for the reply. So you don't think it would be the computer or anything? The car only has 94k on it.

Thanks!

Wow, low mileage. Sounds like the transmission is shot to me, but it could be the torque converter I guess. Good luck.

My brother's Dodge Shadow had the same exact problem, put it in D or R, step on the gas and nothing!!! In his case the rebuild was more than the car was worth, a good $900 for a rebuilt transmission from a friend, after being quoted $2000 from somewhere else. I think it's time to consider the manual swap, IMO cheaper and more reliable.

I had the same problem in my 89 when i bought it cheap. Had a friend rebuild, $900. Worked fine for almost a whole year. then the transmission started slipping again.

I've thought about swapping it over to manual, but I plan to drop the SR in there within the year. I don't want to buy a flywheel and a new clutch they are going to be discarded in less than a year. I found an entire 92 that was hit in the front for $300. I'll probably just get that, use that transmission, and take the power steering lines and resivoir for later. I was just hoping that it would be something the the 'controller' or something that wouldn't involve pulling the transmission. :(

by the way, do a diagnostic.... I copied this out of the '89 FSM

If you get no error code here, its not the control box or any control circuit

Auto to manual transmission swap was very easy. Anyone have a cheap manual transmission? I've done the swap if you have any questions. Nick

Oh i remember you I borrowed your shampoo at the Indy meet. My transmission went out too Friday night coming home from work. Accually some thing came loose like a gear tooth or some thing and my transmission started to bind up because it wedged in between the gears and the syncros. Too bad I sold my transmission after my auto to manual swap. I guess all that neutral droping was bad. Thats ok I beat the crap out of my car. Nick

I believe you can use a DOHC transmission. The guy who bought my auto transmission put it a 89 240sx. I don't know what he had to do to make it work. Nick

Well, I finally did the diagnostic. The OD light flashes are all the same and fast. It says the cause could be low battery, battery has been disconnected for a long time, ... The car has been sitting for over a year, is there just something that I need to do or is it the transmission itself? Any ideas?
