Car won't engage in any gear! HELP!

I was coming home from work and all the sudden my RPM's started reving way up when I pressed the gas, acting like the car was in neutral. I managed to coast into a parking lot, turned the car off and back on, and it worked for about another 500 feet - long enough for me to coast into another parking lot.

I had it towed home and tried to get it to work when at home. It will not engage in any gear, including reverse. The RPM's change ever so slightly, but you can not feel the car shift into gear nor go anywhere, it just revs the engine up.

Please help! Is my transmission shot?

manual or auto transmission?

It's probably shot. They all wear out eventually. They're not the best automatics out there to begin with. Had one in my first 240. It's used in several different vehicles (Mazda MPV and several others) Cost me $1200 to have it rebuilt. Gonna be the last auto I own if I can help it.

I doubt the transmission "wore out". These trannies just needs a little extra attention. For example, the cooling tank in the radiator doesn't have fins to help cool the fluid better, which means if you add a transmission cooler you'd be a hell of alot safer. The fluid needs to be flushed accordingly. Alot of people neglect to change their coolant, and when coolant loses it's effeciency, the transmission fluid is also affected. I'd say nissan could have been insightful to these very simple problems and taken preventative measures.

joes240, Check your transmission fluid level. Usually when the transmission is about to go out you'll defnitely get some warning signs. For it to go out all of a sudden without warning is a little weird.

check fluid condition ie smell and color should be from a deep burgandy red to pink...if its brown to black you most likly have suffered some clutch material loss if the level is too high you could have possibly blown some seals due to high pressure. if the stick check comes out ok drop the pan and check for metal flakes in the pan dont be too concerned about the (fuzz) on the magnets in the pan thats pretty normal. its flakes of metal floating in the remaining fluid in the pan that you need to be concerned about. if you have metal in there i would suggest a reman unit or have that one rebuilt.

warning when you go to pull the pan make sure you drain the fluid first. but beaware even after draining it the pan will still have fluid in it and can get real messy try to keep the pan level as you lower it.

keep a thick stack of newspapers under you to work with...or some large pieces of cardboard, that way the fluid will not spill on your surface. auto transmission jobs get messy enough to spill oil all over the place when you do it for the first time.
