I was coming home from work and all the sudden my RPM's started reving way up when I pressed the gas, acting like the car was in neutral. I managed to coast into a parking lot, turned the car off and back on, and it worked for about another 500 feet - long enough for me to coast into another parking lot.

I had it towed home and tried to get it to work when at home. It will not engage in any gear, including reverse. The RPM's change ever so slightly, but you can not feel the car shift into gear nor go anywhere, it just revs the engine up.

Please help! Is my transmission shot?

I'm assuming this is for auto transmission? I'm not an expert but I'll give it a shot.

If your transmission had problems beforehand, ie slipped or shifted weird, then your transmission or torque converter might be shot.

If your transmission was working the way it was supposed to, smooth shifts, no slippage, a sensor might have gotten unplugged or something.

Check your transmission fluid level, and run a computer diagnostic. There was a similar thread not too long ago in the technical forum, try there for more ideas.

ive got 3 words for you........FIVE SPEED SWAP..........I had a 89 w/ auto transmission that did this exact same thing. Still dont know why, but it was cheaper to swap to 5sp than rebuild the auto (again). It was $1200 for the frist rebuild and i took it out and put it back in. The 5sp swap was somewhat easy. Hardest part is getting that damned auto out

I'd say yes. That's what my old Tempo did before the auto transmission went belly up. With the relative availability of manual and automatic transmissions, I wouldn't dream of having it rebuilt.

By all means, take it to a shop if you can get a free or low coast diagnosis of the problem, but don't pay to have it rebuilt. You can probably get a transmission with lower mileage for much less than any work on an automatic would be.
