I notice it mostly in the morning for the first few hours of driving that when i come to a light or stop sign, the car will stumble a bit like it wants to stall (but doesnt)

The car takes off great with no probs, just coming to a stop is what worries me.

What could be the problem? something i can fix?

Not sure if this is the problem, but it might help.

When I purchased my car it had a dead battery on the lot. I got it home and the car was idling low. The next day I took it in to the dealer and they reset the idle learn computer. After that it was much better.

The tech explained that if the car has a dead battery for a long period of time (shipping & sitting on the lot), that the computer sometimes needs to be reset to it's default parameters. Not sure why it wouldn't be designed to do that automatically, but it fixed the problem.

What you're experiencing is normal, for the most part. The CVT doesn't "drop" into its lowest gear immediately like a traditional automatic, the car will sometimes "shudder" as the hydraulic servos force the pulleys into the "low" position just before the car stops completely (it takes electrical and mechanical energy to make this happen, hence the sudden engine "stumble." I've discovered that in order to combat this, try to avoid sudden stops. If the engine is stumbling continuously for more than a second or two AFTER stopping, than your base idle needs to be adjusted, or there is a vacuum leak or other underlying problem.

it happens very quickly (maybe half a second) then goes back to normal rpm's (700-800rpm)

Well as long as its normal, then i guess im ok

so why does it only happen for the first bit of my morning drive?

I would imagine that before the transmission fluid is completely warmed up, the transmission cannot react as quickly as normal.
