as topic states... any way to shim it or something - or should we just spray it with wd40? the flywheel is a bit rustyish - been a while since this car started.

is it a sound as if the back of the flywheel is brushing up against the sandwich plate? like the sound you hear when you sharpen a knife? i have the same sound if thats what you are talking about. and it sounds like it stays engaged after a few seconds, but its really random.

haha, just dont count on it staying like that for a few years or anything... sounds like you could use a new starter if it fails again.

I realize this post is old as dirt, but I'm having the same problem after doing a auto to manual swap...I looked it up in the RM, but not quite sure how to fix it. Any pointers? I might get flammed for this, but I am still running my auto starter, and ecu for lack of the manual versions...

Its the starter bendix. I am not sure what kind of bendix is on your car. Its either a spring type that relies on spring pressure to push the bendix gear away from the flywheel or its the flipper type that flips the gear back and forth on a shaft. Sometimes the springs break and sometimes that shafts get stuck. Regardless, the best thing you can do is pull the starter off and bench test it and see if you can fix it.
