I own a 97 Nissan altima which now has gone a little above 160,000 miles.
I recently started having engine stalling problems when the car comes to idle speed. Car starts ok and runs fine for about 5 miles or so and suddenly starts to stall on stoplights, when I bring it to idle speed. The tachometer jumps from about 750rpm to 0 and continues to shake until the car stalls completely.
I put the lever to neutral and push on the gas pedal to stop it from stalling. It again runs fine for a couple of minutes and the problem starts again.
I bought a code scanner and it only gave me the knock sensor code, which as I heard, cannot lead to a big problem like this.
Here's what I did after doing some research online.
Replaced fuel filter.
Added a booster/water remover liquid into my fuel tank.
Changed the distributor cap along with the rotor.
Changed spark plugs/ wires. ( while changing this I noticed some oil in the spark plug chamber but I dont think this is the main cause for the problem. Anyway I am planning to change the valve cover gaskets soon).
Changed both the oxygen sensors.
Changed oil.
I cannot afford to show it to a technician and even if I did I doubt he will find the solution without replacing some expensive good parts which doesn't need to be replaced.
Really appreciate some advice and I know there are many people who have experienced the same exact problem which is common in nissan altimas. Thanks in advance.
How old are the belts and are they slipping?
How old is the battery and did you check each cell witha hydrometer to see if you have a weak cell or perform a load test?
Did you ever measure the output voltage from the alternator?
Check the ground from the battery and make sure there is no corrosion on your battery terminals. The ground strap could be corroded or making a poor connection.
Just a few things that are easy to check
