Electrical or vacuum issue would be my guess. Check your fusebox (pay attn to the fusible links on the passenger side box, I had a similar prob with a half-melted fusible link that eventually burned out, thanks to an arcing wire), check ignition components, check the ECU for codes. I'm not certain what else would cause this problem, if someone else knows feel free to chime in.
As for vacuum, just do a general inspection of all the hoses. The ones behind the head just love to rot out. It'll seem like a rats nest of little rubber hoses, just squeeze, bend, flex them, make sure none of them are broken. I had about four back there that were all completely severed and one with a rip in it. You'll probably have to take off your hood (4 12mm bolts, 2 on each side, careful, it's fairly heavy, and make sure not to chip the paint) to get to them. Check the EGR also, just for good measure. Compress the diaphragm from below whilst idling and if the engine doesn't sputter and struggle to stay alive, it's shot.
