Car sputters violently... what could it be?

hello,I have a KA stock except for an Injen CAI, during normal driving at around 2000 RPM's the car starts to sputter, it kinda just slows down if I try to hold the throttle are 2K it will get worse. it does this all the way to 3500 RPM's. the weird thing is if I get on the throttle hard the car doesnt sputter.I was thinking it is one of the following:1. auto transmission crapping out2. fuel injectors3. spark plugs4. in dire need of tune up

any thoughts?

you could proably start with the tune up wouldn't hurt.

I was kinda hoping it wasnt that because I am in the middle of financing a swap and i dont really want to shell out major moolah for a motor im ditching.anyway, anyone else got some ideas?

try to read the codes from your ecu and see what it throws out.

I was experiencing the same thing, happened last summer. What conditions does it usually happen in? May have just been me, but the car would usually do it when it was moist out. Had no idea what it is but did a simple tune up - plugs, cap rotor, oil, filter. And I haven't had the problem yet.
