I have a 90 240 SE and so i hear an obnoxious tick from the engine which sounds liek a valve tap. ive checked the lifters and they all appear to be ok. i pulled em off and they all go in and out good and smoothly. i did a compression check and all cylinders are around 150 plus or minus 5 psi. The noise began after i changed the timing chain. it made the noise before briefly for a while before i changed the chain, which is why i changed it. after the change the noise was permanent tho, and i have driven 3000 miles since then. there has been little noticable performance loss (slight but not much) and the car seems to drive and idle fine. there is a slight miss at steady rpms when free revving. any ideas guys?

could it be a pcv valve? i should just replace it. i have tried lifter conditioner stuff, engine cleaner at the oil change, and i just want the stupid thing to shut the hell up. it sounds like it is comin from # 3 or 4 cylinder top end

what could it be? could a valve have a tick even tho there is good compression?

thanks in advancestevo

Yea I seem to be having the same problem, did u check all your valves to see if you may have fked one up? Im pulling my valve cover off tonight and seeing if I can see anything wrong with it without having to pull everything apart hopefully. Anything special needed to pull the lifters off or anything I might wanna know that will help if I decide to try lol?

well it was easy to get the lifters off, but you need a torque wrench to reinstall them. my tensioner is brand new and it is not the chain making noise. i wish my car would shut up but its hard to fix it when there are only symptoms but no known problems

Does it sound anything like this?

Check your exhaust manifold bolts and gaskets.

The two bolts and two studs on the front half of the manifold closest to the front of the car were missing, causing my gasket to fall down and cause a terrible leak at the manifold.

The video was when the problem was at it's worst. I drove around for a few years (believe it or not) with the ticking thinking it was the lifters, **** did I feel stupid after that.

Single cams are for the dedicated, and sometimes dedication requires ear plugs, cause they are not exactly quiet motors :P

Work horse, baby. Good luck
