car sounds like a bus

I recently bought a 1990 N/A, and have never had any experience with any z's before. Is the engine normally really loud? It's not any unusual sound, it just runs really loud, kinda sounds like a bus driving. Also when driving it, the loudness happens then around 5k rpms it finally quiets down and has a "normal" engine tone. Does this sound ok?

oh, and the car has 104,000 miles with no mods other than an aftermarket intake.

It could possibly be your fan clutch. With the car off and cold, open the hood and turn the fan by hand. It should turn freely with resistance, give it a good turn and if its stop almost immediately, needs to be replaced. It turns very freely like two or more revolutions, need replaced. It should really only make one full turn and stop. Give this a shot first, may be the issue.

Ditto^ my old 4runner did that, sounded like a dump truck rolling down the street.
