car smokes like crazy!

hey guys have the 89 240 wit the SOHC 5 speed in it...its got 170,00 miles on it with the same pistons and stuff from the factory...when i accelerate it smokes quite a bit and its not too bad at cruising speeds.....is there any product out there or do you know of any way to stop or help with the smoking..i know it prolly needs new pistons and rings...but i can buy a cheaper engine than the new pistons and install prices...but thanks alot

I'll bet it's valve stem seals. Do a compression test and post the results

I second the valve stem seals. Next suspect is rings.

My question is what color of smoke do you see out the pipe?

Blue = Burning excessive engine oil in the combustion chamberBlack = Excessive amount of unburned fuelWhite = Coolant or water leak at the int. manifold or head itself. (not to be confused with normal condensation)

if the smokes white and its coolant u can smell the coolant burning smells almost sweet like...::caution tho:: dont just start huffing the exhaust lol

haha i wont breathe my exahust too much but its deff blue smoke that comes out , especially on accelerating like around 4 grand its crazy..smokes alot and yu can deff smell oil being burned

car runs fine , starts up beautifully and idles at around 1500 for first 1-2 minutes if that and then drops to 800 and runs good , alil throttle lag type stuff on accell i just started noticing yesterday but other than that good and also when i coast sometimes for like the first 10 minutes of driving it idles at 1500 and then revs to 200 grand then drops back to 1500 and repaets this until i shift back into 5th or bog the motor down
