I notice that the rear of my QX4 car "bottoms out" after going over speed bumps - especially when carrying people in the back.

Also, when going over any bump at anything more than about 25mph the front glides over it, but the back certainly makes you notice the bump.

What do I need to change?

sounds like your shocks. take a look at them. are they leaking/wet? if they're factory, i'd bet a lot of money that they're blown.

check you springs they tend to get lazy and sag, if they sag to much they wont support the trucks weight and it wont matter if you have new shocks it will still hit the bump stop.

The QX4 HAS A BAD REAR SUSPENSION. Stock equipment leaves a lot to desire. The springs are wimpy and the shocks are so, so. Even new the rear end will have difficulty holding 4 passengers and their bags.

But banging is telling you that the shocks are gone at the very least. My originals lasted 13 years, which is not bad for crappy shocks, the springs are still OK on mine, but I can't say about your vehicle.

So start with a shock removal, test them then replace and see if the ride improves. If later the springs have to come out it is an easy job as are the shocks.

To replace the shocks if they are still original jack up the rear end via the diff. an air gun is nice to first tighten the nuts a bit, then wipe the crap off then back the nuts/bolts off With the rear axle hanging free, do 1 side at a time, take the wheel off for a bit more room. Tightening first will prevent you breaking the bolt, but only a bit.

Loosen both top and bottom, remember how it goes on, you can check the other side, that's why 1 side at a time. The old shocks will come off easily and when off try to compress the shock and then pull apart, if it move back and forth easily it is done. Try the new ones, should be difficult and slow to move.

Test drive for a while, it will take a little time for you to notice the bumps and bounce compared to the old ones.
