Ok, this sounds like a completely idiotic question, I know. I've had seven different cars in my life, but never have I had a car that does this. Every time... not just sometimes, every time I get out of my car, when I touch the side of my car or the door to close it or whatever, it shocks me. I mean a big shock, sometimes big enough that a trace of energy makes a visible line from the side of my car to my finger.

Any ideas what could make my car do this?

I've double checked a few of the grounds, but I haven't really changed any electrical systems in my car. Just a headunit install - that's the only time I've touched any wires in there.

I know this is no help, but when I was in Junior High my family owned a 1995 Mercury Villager (VG33 equipped Quest with a Mercury logo) that did the exact same thing. Everytime I got out the sliding door it would shock me. Hard

It's kind of funny... it was doing it consistantly every time - until I posted this. Now it only does it every second or third time I get out of my car.

The charge is not coming from the car, it is coming from you. When you drive, your feet and backside constantly rub on the cloth of the rug and chair. You then become statically charged. Since most of our car's interior are non conductive, your body doesn't get to discharge this energy until you step out and touch the body of your car. ZAP!This is why you should ground yourself if you decide to fill up your own gas tank, the spark of the electricity and the gas fumes coming out of your gas tank can ignite. (People think this is because of cell phones haha)A solution to not become charged, use fabric softener when you dry your clothes in the dryer. That will reduce the static charge coming from your clothes.
