Been happening to me for a month now...Everytime I close the door after I drive, I get shocked...

Can anybody tell me why?

Static electricity build up from your seat fabrics and the relatively low humidity in VA, MD and DC recently produces the shock factor when you get out of your Versa.

slept through that in science class?

We used to take balloons in the winter, rub them in our hair and then stick them to the ceiling due to the static electricity. Has to be really dry.

There is low humidity here in CO, dew point is like in the teens. Never been shocked once either!

Think of it as your Versa pinching you in the butt because she likes you, then it's not so bad.

i was always convinced that with the 20's on i was creating more friction due to the larger contact patch and stickier tires... care to elaborate?

That isn't very likely as the car is grounded (ground cable and wires to the chassis, etc.) The only thing that isn't grounded is you. You are suspended inside the car, surrounded by synthetic materials and painted metal. The seat covering material is synthetic. The charge is generated from friction between your clothes and the seat. If you touch exposed metal in the car (bolts that affix the driver's seat to the floor for example) before exiting, I bet you wouldn't get shocked.

Okay... just during the time I've "been in town" I've seen 4 or 5 versions of this thread...

Your V doesn't shock you because it hates you.and it likely doesn't shock you because it loves you, but whatever helps you deal with getting zapped every freaking time you leave your mother-loving Camel... I mean car. *coughcough* XoD

If you don't like it, softly apply your shoe to the door and push closed. Then you won't get shocked... unless your barefoot... then I can't help you. Find a rubber object to carry with you.

I touch my jacket against the car door to ground myself as I'm getting out. I get zapped 100% of the time I get out of my car. Sometimes its so bad, I see a spark when its dark out

When you get out of the car, lightly smack something metal (door or middle pillar is what I use) to discharge the static electricity. You don't need to hit it hard, just like you're clapping your hands. Because you're whapping it, the sensation of the contact overrides the brief shock that occurs at the same time the static electricity discharges. It's the same concept that a good dentist uses when giving you a shot (wiggle your cheek as the needle's going in, you feel it a lot less).

Old thread, I know, but this is super easy.

Hi
I've had the same problem since it was new.It shocks me every time I exit the vehicle. The service center told me it was the wiring for the car alarm.I'm at the point where today I googled the problem to see if anyone else has this issue. That how I found you.
Not only is this very annoying, it could be deadly. Here's a scenario to consider. 1. You exit the car with out discharging. 2. You reach down and pull the gas door handle "plastic". 3. You open the gas cap "plastic". 4. You start pumping and then touch the car...perhaps the gas door...and BOOM.
I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER A HALF CENTURY AND HAVE NEVER HAD STATIC ELECTRICITY HAPPEN EVERY TIME I EXIT A VEHICLE.I'm going to do a little more research into this since I'm retired and have the time. I'll let you all know what I've come up with shortly.
Take care and remember...ALWAYS DISCHARGE WHEN REFUELING.

jkelly, just curious, what state do you live? I've lived in Michgan for almost 40 years and every winter static electricity is a given. This is on each and every car I've owned or driven.

We have static electricity around the house as well particularly when it is super cold. but is quite controlled since I have a whole house humidifier.

It is automatic for me to discharge every time I exit the car so it is not an issue for me when fueling. Also I would think this is not really an issue otherwise we would have gas station fires everyday around here.
