so i was driving my car, 89 s13 ka-e, and i was going back home from giving my buddy a ride, i was in 5th gear and the red light came on, so i downshift and wheni come to second i hear this metal hitting metal sound, it gets louder, i shift into 1st and then it gets even louder and then it sputters and dies at the same time the car comes to a stop.

white smoke starts coming from the engine bay, my buddy gets out and pushes the car off to the side of the road and we pop the hood and it just billows out of their and it smells like hell...

here's somethings before this happend, my heat doesn't work because my car is overheating, or at least that's what the gauge says. i filled the radiator with some 50/50 mix four days previous, it ate most of the bottle, the rest i used to fill the reservoir with it....

after the smoke cleared and the engine was cold enough, the reservoir was empty, and the radiator was empty, so i called my brother and he came and we went to walgreens got some more coolant and a quart of oil...put it in and started the car...it clicked and you could hear the timing chain rattling and and something else, metal to metal contact again...and it finally turned over, after like 6 seconds of it being on my brother yells at me to turn it off...i get out and see coolant splashed over him...

so we kinda figured it looks like it was coming from the bottom of the timing chain cover, so i thought the coolant mixed in with oil and it's just fooked, or the block is cracked and i'm double fooked, so i got it towed to a local shop, where they have 2 ka's laying around...

they called me today and said it's the water pump, it's busted and it's just letting everything leak out, so it's 95 bux for the pump, and 1 hour to 1 and a half hours of labor, plus towing, and diagnostics, so it's gonna be like 300 bux for everything, you think it's worth it, i don't know what kind of damage is done internally and i know sooner or later that timing chain is gonna go,...so what should i do?

i planned on turboin my ka because i like the torque, but now i'm looking at dropping a ca in there but i really don't feel like losing all that torque...so it's either 300 to put a new water pump in with the chance of this motor blowing up, dropping in one of the ka's they have at the shop, ones' a e with unidentified mile, and ones a de with 130,000, or should i spend about 1500 to 2000 to get a ca dropped in and ready to go?

i mean i don't have that kind of money right now but i figure while it's already at the shop, what the hell?

any info would be great, sorry for the long post.

That's tough decision. If it were me, I'd go with the ca but if you like the torque, you can't beat the ka. I really wish I could be more help but it's your car and your call.

If you don't even have enough money to support and maintain a KA, I don't see how swapping a CA would be any better. Especially considering your power-band preferences.

Depending on your area, parts should be scarce, and shipping would negate most of the cost benefits of a CA.

Think you have enough money to have one of the KAs at the shop rebuilt and dropped in your car? (nothing major... just get it back to stock at least) Could be a good chance to have a DE put in.

i spent about 1000 bux on fixing it and getting it running for the past 2 years...i've only put 3,000 miles on the car in that 2 year period...it was running fine until i noticed the timing chain a few months ago, and then the coolant last week, it just kinda happend all the sudden...i have enough money to swap in the motor by the end of the month if that's what it comes down to

i had the shop do a compression check and it's within paramaters of what it should be...

i could drop the de in but it's gonna be about 1500 bux after everythings dropped in and running because the de has a headgasket on the way out...

i'm thinking bout just having them put the water pump in and just running on the e but then who knows what kind of damage has been done...but getting the de rebuilt sounds like a good idea

if you spent so much money on your engine, why are you so set on buying another? If your compression checks out, why not fix the cheap (compared to a new motor) water pump? Loads cheaper how i see it
