Hey guys, Today I found a salesperson job at a NISSAN dealership close to me, and oddly enough they are asking for people with absolutely no car sales experience. And I in fact have none, so naturally I want the position. What I am asking for is maybe some advice from some people who do have experience. Maybe give me an idea of what a dealership is looking for, what to expect, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Good enough reason.

I've never done any work as a car salesman, but I would imagine they will require that you sell your soul to the devil and annoy people to death.

My best advice is not to get sucked into this business. ;)

Working retail is one thing, but a car salesman is on a whole different level.

Selling that ONE car can mean the difference from being employed or out of work.

Actually my cousin got a job about a year ago as a car salesman at a Nissan dealership. He worked there for about 2 months before he got sick of the demands, unsteady paychecks, and insane managers. He said it was by far and away the worst job he ever had.

Understandable, I figure it going to be a high stress job, but the job I am at now is the same and is only getting worse with pay cuts. I need something new, and to be totally honest I dont have much to lose and a lot to possibly gain...

Any job that is commission only is going to suck the big one. That kind of reward system only serves to make one a greedy liar.

Yeah I have done commission based jobs before and they did suck, but you had every opportunity to make a lot of money.

It's one thing to work in somewhere like an electronics or clothing store that is based on commission. People are more likely to be able to just go ahead and buy $150 worth of clothes than a $35k car.

You may consider yourself a person of integrity, but you will be surrounded by people who will bring you down. You will have to be dishonest to meet the management's demands & to hold your own against the your dishonest coworkers.

On the other hand, this is a great opportunity if you are someone who considers the truth a matter of perspective, if you get jollies from manipulating people, and are very self-centered. I would hope this doesn't describe you.

Unfortunately it does not. I dont know that I will be good at it. I know if I was to be a sales person there is no way I could ever conform to the typical sales person persona. Maybe everyone at the dealership will just be super nice and instead of getting paid off commission we get paid on our levels of positivity!!!! :woot: :mike

You don't have to be a liar or a crappy person to sell cars. I sell used cars so its a bit different. But I look at it as if someone comes to my shop they probably want to buy a car. I think the age of sleazy(sp) car sales people is starting to fade. (I also wholesale cars so I am in plenty of dealerships).

As for pointers for getting the job, show you are persistent and you really want the job, Call couple days after the interview etc. Dress clean and professional. I like the auto business, I buy from and sell to new car stores as my main job. Though I have no new car sales experience, so my opinion is a little off from what your looking for.

Good Luck,
Dan

I sold cars for about a year and really hated it, but that's just me. There's some good money to be made in it and it can be a lot of fun too. I was just asked to pull some shady techniques that I wasn't comfortable with when selling used cars at the dealership I was working at. That along with the lack of constant cash flow made me realize I needed to move on to something else.

I'm not trying to discourage you though, a lot of the guys there made a decent salary, and if you can get good at it i'm sure you would be able to as well. I had some really good checks there but just be prepared for dry spells too, the winter is a very slow season usually and there's other times it's slow throughout the year so don't blow all of your paychecks without setting some aside for those times. I went over a month one time without making a large commission sale, which really sucked. I can agree with what was said above though, it was the worst job i've ever had in my life. Some people can live off of commission but I couldn't do it, I don't like not knowing if i'll have a paycheck or not every pay period. A lot of people are really successful at it though so if you don't mind taking the risk it may pay off for you. Good luck! :dblthumb:

You might want to learn a little more about the dealership you're planning on working for then...

Your job satisfaction will depend 200% on the quality of your manager. If he's honest and handles you in a straightforward and professional manner, then you're golden. If you think he's being condescending, pushy, and feeding you wild BS about potential income, RUN LIKE HELL.

If they want you to pay a deposit for training materials, RUN LIKE HELL.
