Car: 1998 Nissan Altima 96,xxx miles, I got the car after a lease and its condition was very "used”, so it probably has an additional 50K on it.

transmission fluid changes at 70K 80K and 90K. transmission has plenty of fluid and fluid is clean, it also has an additional transmission cooler, temperature rarely exceeds 150F, but on a very hot day in stop and go will go up to 180F.

The whole car rattles at idle when the automatic transmission is in R,D,1 and 2, the rattle goes away when in P or N.There is no difference in rattling when car is moving between D or N.

Possible causes? How expensive will it be to fix?

rattles or shakes? if it's shaking, sounds like you have a collapsed motor mount or 2.replace all the mounts because if one is bad, the others are probably not too far behind.

I should have been more careful in my choice of words, it is indeed shaking and excessive vibrations.

I inspected the mounts and you guys were right. The front mount has collapsed. The passenger side the middle is ripped and the driver side is warped
