Tough to diagnose it without actually seeing it in person. Your timing chain would have to be stretched a bit to cause that problem I think. The timing component that fails on these cars isn't the chain, but rather the plastic chain guide). However, if your tensioner were to fail, it would not be taking the slack out of the chain as it rotated. What you can do is remove the valve cover and press on the chain to check for looseness. If it's just flopping around in there or if the chain guid is gone, you need to start there first.
If it starts sometimes and not others, have your battery checked out. If the battery doesn't have just enough amperage it'll do what you've described. It could also be a failing starter. I've got a starter that'll be for sale soon and it's in great shape.
