I have a 1990 240sx. For the past two weeks been having trouble with it heating up. My pop and me replaced the radiator and hoses. It still was overheating so my dad figured it was the Thermostat and just removed it and we put it all together again. The car is still overheating, the only leak is from the resevoir that is boiling over. The car has only really overheated once ive been sure to keep fluid in it and to only drive it when i have to. I have no idea what else to do.

did you bleed the air out of the cooling system? there is a gold machine screw in the intake manifold with a gold label next to it.

I will do that right about now. Do i NEED a thermostat? or is it alright to run it without one? Thanks.

You should run a thermostat. This in essence will slow the coolant down and allow it to cool. With out the thermostat in the coolant flows too fast and does not have time to cool down.

So ive spent too much time trying to solve this problem and it wont stop. So far the radiator and hoses have been replaced. The thermostat is new as well. I think i bled the air out of the cooling system, we just took it off and ran the car till coolant leaked out at a steady flow. I guess the only thing left to replace is the water pump. It has overheated so im kinda stressed hoping i didnt f-up my engine. Any advice is appreciated.

With the heater on "HOT." Raise the front end up. Undo the one bolt on the water neck (has that yellow sticker under it). Fill till coolant comes out that bolt opening. Replace the plug back into the hole. Keep filling through your radiator cap. Fill it till it comes all the way to the top and recap your radiator. Squeeze the upper radiator hose repeatedly and now check under the radiator cap. If the level goes down, keep at it. If it's stable, lower the car back down if you want, but start the car. Squeeze the upper radiator hose while it's going. I usually keep squeezing for about 30 seconds before I shut down the car and let it cool off a bit more then back to squeezing and refilling until the system is packed with coolant. Don't leave the radiator partially empty of coolant either. Get it all packed in there.

Keep the thermo. Change the water pump while you're there. It's like what 30 bucks or something.
