Ok is it a squeel or a hum. There is a big difference. A bad hum sound- could be your tires ( a bad belt in the tire or real low tire pressure)

A squeel, more than likely its your belts or one of your pumps (water, power steering) is going bad.

Last thing to try, turn your radio off. It might be that your car forgot the words and decided to humm the words it doenst know. OK Bad joke

a humming could indicate a worn bearing protesting it's condition.

if it sounds like your tires are squealing it's most likely your belt (fan belt) check to see if it's worn or loose....if it's worn replace it. if it's loose tighten it.

yep it's belts. You should replace them but you have to determine where the grease or oil came from first and fix that or you will just screw up another set.

try this for a basic DIY...of course omit the swapping pulley parts.http://home.earthlink.net/~j240sxna/pulley/

belts are cheap. get a Gates belt if ya can. we're talking the $10 range.
