Car makes a funny noise when revved?

The higher I increase my RPMs, the louder this kind of "whirr" sound gets, I THINK it might be one of the fans, but I dont know for sure. Its definately the sound of something cutting wind tho, I know that much. Anyone ever had this happen?

yeah i'm 99% sure it's the mechanical fan clutch that has gone bad. This happened on my previous '90 240. I replaced the fan clutch with one from kragen..but i guess the factory ones are better because the whirring noise still came. I ended up going with an electric fan.

yeah, I've had bad luck with my fan clutches, my stock one would squeal a high pitch piercing noise when I revved past 4000, then I replaced it with a new one from discount auto. it made things better but will still squeall occasionally when I rev very high in first gear.

yeah and its makes the loud whirring sound still, only real cure is an electric fan.

and it reduces drag on the motor so its a 2 for 1 deal

yup. the engine sounded much better w/out the mech. fan also. I had no overheating problems due to inadequate cooling from the electric fan, either. just make sure the rest of your cooling system is in good shape.
