the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) would most likely be the culprit here, You could possibly clean it and see if it works once re-installed as well as testing connectors, sensors, ect... or just buy a new one. If you pay $500.00 to have some one do it for you, you might as well flush that money down the toilet or put it in an envalope and send it to me. it's a couple of wire connectors and four screws, it is usually placed on the back of the intake mani.
p.s. it is a real part of your car lol
BTW...if your machanic dumbs it down too much for you, maybe there is a reason for that lol
