Car issues need advice and info

Well, i just bought a 1993 240sx convertible on ebay. It's currently sitting in the seller's driveway. I was going to pick it up today but some unforseen errors popped up on his end. Turns out he went out to start the car and get it running this morning to see if everything was alright and found out that two things were wrong.

1. the ebrake was frozen and unable to release

2. the engine was able to run fine, yet the transmission would not engage into gear to allow the car to move.

However to complicate this even more, the car ran fine when he got it back from the shop several days earlier. Now i know the owner is a good guy and i've talked to him several times already so I know it's not foul play. I'm just curious to what it may be.

Any suggestions?

If nothing else works, I'll be towing it back to Wisconsin from Detroit area, but if at all possible driving it back under it's own power would be more convenient.
