Looks like a resistor box. The used to sell them on ebay as a way to increase horsepower. You increase the MAF signal to trick the ECU into thinking it has more air passing through so it runs richer.

I read the other suggestions. I would replace that maf, and pigtail with as much air as possible and return it to stock.

a pigtail is a term used to refer to the plug and a short length of wire used to connect it, i doubt it would short out the ecu....it may....but i doubt it, but if you need one ill sell you my extra one..... and your check engine light is probably on because your current maf is either damaged or that "chip''(cheap a** piece of junk resistor) has caused a fault, replace it clear the codes in your ECU(after you read them to be sure there arent any other faults) and give her another try

i had the exact same problem.my friend bought those damn s2pid resistor box and installed it in my hatch on race nyt without me knowing. i blew my MAF and shorted out my ecu. i was told by the nico club members that the little resistor box created a VOLTAGE SPIKE and burnt out my ECU. a $18 little resistor box cost me a new MAF ($260+s/h) and a second hand ECU ( $80+s/h). now thats aprox. a $360 HEADACHE!

before you install the new MAF, make sure you get rid of the little black box.Check all wires. Check your ECU.i think other than that your good.

how would i check the ecu? and also would it be safe to install the new maf if my ecu could be damaged? or should i just get both items anyway and install them at the same time. would any ka24de ecu work?

You download the FSM and you check power to the sensors ie, injectors, maf, IAC, TPS ETC.

You need a voltmeter, or just fix the issue and try starting it.
