When I drive my car for a good distance it does just fine. When I go to restart it shortly after nothing happens when I turn the key to start (all of the electronics come on). The battery is new and free of corrosion, i replaced the starter relay and I am still having a problem. After the car sits over night it will fire up just fine. When I checked all the connections to the starter i noticed a few threaded holes around the starter like there was supposed to be a heat shield there. The exhaust runs right by the starter. What I am asking is can the starter be heating up when I drive and will not operate till it cools down? Tow trucks are getting expensive. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Was the flywheel replaced with the starter? When the flywheel loses enough teeth, it becomes progressively harder to start the car and a bit random. In the last 6-8 months, have you had any "screeching" at startup?

He mention nothing happens after its hot.If the flywheel was missing teeth Im sure there would be a noticeable noise..Either Screeching or the starter free wheeling. My starter does have a heat shield FYI.
