Actually, this depends on the policy language. Some policies put limitations or excludes certain aftermarket parts or even any aftermarket parts(excluding non OEM replacement parts). Some policies are very broad. Policies generally cover the vehicle and it's equipment. Then it will generally at the least exclude very specific items(Radar detectors, CB radios, tapes and CD's etc). And in some cases it will put a limitation or exclude aftermarket stereo items, and perhaps also do the same for any other types of non-OEM replacement parts. A broker or agent should be able to allow you to see a copy of the policy before you buy.
As far as the photos is concerned, the primary reason is to inspect the condition of the vehicle. This is generally not required if you purchase liability only coverage. Depending on the insurance companies underwriting standards, they may choose not to insure you if you have certain aftermarket mods. Even if you are willing to pay more. And photos can sometimes be waived for longtime customers.
