Car has trouble reving

I did a s14 vvt in a 97 nissan and the car idles fine but does not rev up. The MAF has 1.5 volts at idlebut does not increase when the you try to rev it. If you rev it too fast it will die. I need help and other things that could be wrong. also it smells like it is running rich.

If you can only rev it to about 2500-3000rpm and it starts to bog or die, then either your maf is bad or something is wrong with the wiring to the maf. What happens when you unplug the maf sensor?
