car is a 95 240sx automatic. I just swapped in a different motor which came out of a manual trans car if that makes a difference. It will crank but wont turn over. the timing is correct as is the firing order because there are no backfires or funny sounds. the last try to get it started tonight resulted in just a fast clicking from what sounded like the starter. I know for a fact that the battery is mostly dead because it has to be hooked up to jumper cables to get the results I am getting. Tomorrow i am going to check to make sure that the throttle body is opening up although I think it is because I wouldnt be smelling the gas on the spark plugs. come to think of it there is one sensor, the after cat o2 sensor that is not plugged in at all, could that cause this. Please help I am stumped on this one and have no idea where to go next.

Thanks in advance

Nick

Niether o2 will stop the car from starting and running. The front O2 is the only one used on any car to Asist in maintaining proper fuel mixture but it is not enough to stop a car from running altogether. Just because your not getting odd poping does not mean the firing order is correct or the timing is out of wack. For combustion to take place you need compression. If the firing order is set up in such a way it is firing on the exhuast stroke you have no compression to ignite the fuel. If your smelling gas on the plugs it sounds like your flooded. If you had a weak spark you may not get combustion either. Charge the battery up for a good 6 to 8 hre then try to start it holding your foot to the floor. when it starts to come to life start backing off the throttle. Clean the plugs best you can while the battery is charging.

ok good to know it cant be the o2 sensor. Ill clean the plugs tomorrow when I can actually see good again. I set the timing at top dead center according to the fsm and the firing order I know is 1-3-4-2. I am assuming the timing order goes from the front of the motor back as I cant find anything that suggests either way. I am thinking of just going to get a new batter as this one has seen better days regardless but we will see what tomorrow brings. I kinda figured it was flooded too but letting it sit over night should rememdy that situation also correct?

Thanks Nistech

It goes 1342 on the cap meaning those numbers corrospond to the cyl that wire should go to. the cyl are numbered in order from the front of the valve cover to the back 1 2 3 4.

You should clean the plugs up as well. it will give it a better chance to fire. also while you have all 4 plugs out crank it over a little with your foot to the floor. this will help blow out any excess fuel in the cyl's. Then put the plugs back in and try to start it with about half throttle.
