use a mechanics stethiscope to listen to the front of the engine, try to pin-point were the sound is coming from, if its coming from the front, that may be your timing chain, which is a fairly common problem on the 240's. it could also be your injectors, as they can sometimes be quite noisy.

i have a 1990 240sx se. 185,000 miles. yeah thats alot but it still runs smooth. the clicking noise comes from under the engine or somewhere around there.

yeah, i got the same car as you, so i can help you a little more then if it was a DOHC, because i have more first hand experience with the SOHC. i also have the FSM for it.

it sounds like its your timing chain thats ticking, if you have some basic knowlage of cars and a good mechanical sence (so to speak) it shouldnt be too hard for you. it also helps alot to have an impact wrench for the crank bolt.
