Hello, I have a lingering problem with my car. About 1-2 years ago I replaced the stock air intake on my 92 240sx with an after market cold air intake kit. About 5 months ago, my car started shaking as I drove on the freeway and then eventually turned off. I was told that the problem was the mass air flow meter. I changed the part and the car worked fine for about 3 months. Then the same thing happened again (car started to shake, it sounded like it was gasping for air, like a vacuum and then turned off again). I took to another mechanic and he changed the distributor cap and rotor, changed the oil/filter, did a tune-up and cleaned the fuel injectors. I also changed the fuel filter. The car worked fine for about 2 months and now...once again same problem. I can turn on the car, however, the engine rattles and then turns off. I am becoming frustrated with the so-called "mechanics" as I feel as if I know more about my car than they do most of the time. However, this time I would appreciate anyone's help. If you can help me with a post or if you are a mechanic in the South Bay area in Cailfornia willing to check out/work on my car let me know. I am looking for someone who really knows 92 240sx's very well. Please help... ...

if the maf is causing the car to die you can unplug it and start it back up. with maf unplugged it should run rough but at least it will run.

when you say it shakes, is it like a misfire?

Thanks for the quick reply. When I turn it on, it stays on for anywhere between 20 seconds to a minute and then starts to shake excessively. I can hear a vacuum type of sound like if I were tapping the tip of a vacuum with the palm of my hand. When I press to accelerate, it sounds like the muffler/exhaust has something stuck or farting. What exactly do you mean by misfiring? thanks!

you may have a vaccum leak. Spray carb cleaner on your vaccum lines when the car is running and see if it changes the idle speed at all. If it does, find the bad hose and replace it.

unplug your O2 sensor and see if it will stay running.
