If you're up to the challenge, you can pull the motor itself, tear it down, and look for some signs of what may have possibly started the fire. And if nothings too shot while it's tore down, rebuild it!
Meh depends, he said he needed a valve job so I am going to guess there was some valve slap?
If so you probably did break a valve, causing your interference engine to now make contact with this floating valve, and who knows what the stat of the engine is. I would pull the head for now just to see how bad it is, but maybe its time to source a decent engine that you can refresh.
The fire was probably an intake backfire.
