car died while driving

well tonight as my father was driving the vert home while in motion the car died on him, he ended up having to get it towed to the house. we're about to check it out but from the sound of it sounds like its getting no fuel or it just doesnt want to start. it does crank but we are now just puzzled and have no idea what this could be? we also thought possibly the alarm on it may have shut it off. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn ignition on. the fuel pump is in the hatch.
