car cuts out in 4th and 5th gear

Ok so i have a 89 240sx and this problem just started like 3 days ago. Ill be driving in 4th gear and when it gets to 4 k rpm it feels like fuel cut and i cant hit the gas and start going again till it idles back down to 3k. It also does it in 5th gear but at 3500 rpm instead. All other gears are fine. Oh it also idles at 1900rpm and it feels a bit slugish and smells rich.

your idle sounds pretty high. i think it should be around 700.

Well idk whats going on with my car but it seems to be fine now. I think my car gets periods.....lol. bc seriously every couple of months something happens where it dont run right then out of nowhere its fine.


I did change the fuel filter but i dont think that had anything to do with it. What do you guys think/// thoughts???

I have this exact same problem, only my idle like to rev to 1900 and settle to 1300 after a few seconds. On cool nights, it idles around 900 to 1000 and sounds like a misfire. I was told I might have a vacuum leak, but could not find one. Does the 4th and 5th gear cut out have to do with the speed limiters for 5 speeds at certain rpms?

I remember reading something about gear sensors on the transmission, if I remember correctly, that can cause weird cutting-out problems like that. Not sure about the rich condition, but that sucks in its own right.
