car cranks and then backfires!!!!!!!!!

Please help!! I just got done putting a replacement engine in my 95 240 got everything hooked up and put back together. now when I try to start the car it cranks and then backfires and wont actually fire. I am thinking that the timing is off. please let me know what you think.

or you could be getting to much fuel

I had that problem too after I threw timing in my 89 240sx. Try having a friend crank it while you slowly turn the distributor.

what would slowing turning the dist. do? I dont want to crank it too much for fear that I could blow the engine or something.
