i was doing about 75 on the highway on my way back to my work. i noticed that it took alot of RPM's to get the car to move. every gear took alot. i was one exit away and all of a sudden my RPM's shot from 4500 to 5500 and then to 6000. so i pulled off the road and coasted to a stop. i waited a lil bit. popped the hood and it def smelt like something was burning. (maybe catalytic Converter) or something in the block. maybe head gasket blown. i turned the car back on after cooling it off and it would get in gear, but when i hit the gas and released the clutch, the RPM's just sky rocket. is my transmission slipping or my clutch slipping? or is it something else. please help i have no car and im bout to go to sleep at my work

Sounds like a slipping clutch.

shouldnt the clutch have some kind of problems getting into gear. its still very smooth when i shift. i have noticed that when i shift up, the rpm's and the speedometer do not move at the same rate like they should. the rpm's shoot up and the car takes a while to get up to speed. i have my aftermarket flywheel in back seat and waiting on ebay for my clutch. i dont know if should replace the transmission. i guess ill just replace the clutch and flywheel and see if it starts up. if that dont work, ill try something else. any other suggestions

If your clutch is slipping, I imagine it'd still get into gear just fine.

slipping clutch.no, it would not have problems getting into gear.perfect way to test it.. go like 30mph. shift to 5th gear. smash the throttle all the way down. and watch the rpm's just shoot up.

if that happens, you def. got a slipping clutch

you guys have any idea where the smell is coming from. is that just from the stress on the engine?

i think it might have to be something with my exhaust, cuz sounds like something is burning and it only happened when i was around 5k rpm's

you probably could have just limped it home instead of forking over money for a tow truck.

The smell of burnt clutch is unmistakable. I just re-did the one on my truck and it was $950.00

i was 3 miles from work and couldnt get it to budge. didnt want to blow any thing. i would pay 150 dollars to have my car towed instead of paying for a new bloc. idk. i played it safe. if i were to try and drive that thing to work, which i couldnt cuz i tried, and i if i had ended up blowing something, im sure everyone would call me a dumb a$$ for trying to make it to work when it was obviously not acting right. just unfortunate. glad to know whats wrong wit it though. glad i dont need a new transmission.

def better safe then sorry. your car didnt show any signs of slippage before this happened? you sure you dont have a leak somewhere between the master and the slave? just tossing some ideas out before you get that involved, just seems odd it would go out w/o warning. either way, you played it right imo. good luck with your fix.
