The problems with this s13 before today are:bad idle, slightly poor gas mileage, rich smell from exhaust, and slight blue smoke from exhaust.

Now, what happened today was the following: I spent ten minutes trying to start it up because it seemed as if the engine was flooded (turning over but no spark). It started up and then after about three miles it started to bog at 2500rpm. The bogging got worse until finally the car died in the middle of a u-turn. Now my mind tells me this is an alternator problem however my gut tells me something along the lines of ignition is screwed up. What do you guys think?

The smoke is blue not sooty?Check exhaust for soot, and tell us reult.

Also tell us more details, so the gurus have all the info they need:-milage-location/temps-age of plugs-which sensors are original and which are new/newer (ox sensor, MAF )-Any recent work/service done, any recent work/service skipped

Hah! I knew I left stuff out!

Okay the repairs/maintenance:1. NGK plugs (gapped) have <15K2. Bigger Fuel Filter (300zx) went in five days ago. Car ran a bit smoother afterwards and gas mileage is better.3. New dist. cap, rotor. <15k same time as no. 14. New radiator. -Also, removed a resonator pipe/box connected to intake pipe; located about 12" from throttle body.<5k

I have put 28k miles within my one year of ownership. The total mileage is est. 160K. The idle problem (before today) is a severe fluctation in rpm (+-400) then it smoothens out to normal rpm. It kicks in after the engine has reached operating temp and is worsened by using anything vacuum related such as the brakes or electrical related such as headlights and wipers.

The exhaust is actually white with a bluish tint and only is visible at high mechanical load but not while cruising. About the soot I really dont see any coming out (revving) but do see some inside muffler tips. I am sure that my piston rings are going bad and I am sure my compression is bad also since when i do get a steady idle the engine sends intermittent shakes through chassis and with a quart of oil every 4-5 days of consumption. Also after interstate driving or if the outside temp is >85 F (atlanta) then my exhaust makes an ugly fart sound when coming out of low gear (2mph in 2nd gear).

Thats about it for the details I hope, and I did'nt mean for it to come out so boring.
