Does anyone know why a new Panasonic MP3 player model CQ-DP383U will burn out the starter but only on the second time starting the engine. I have had this done 2 days in a row.My car is back in the shop and its costing me a bundle. Starters are not cheap and the shop rate is expensive.

I know all connections are correct, I know I have NO short circuits.

The car ran great with my older Panasonic with the exact same wiring lay-out. The car runs great with-out the new MP3 player, plugged in.

Plug it in and only on the second start, the starter remains engaged and shorts out.:help

Make sure again that you wired it correctly, that all fuses are in place, etc. If you didn't already, I suggest buying one of those plug-in converters from Wal-Mart, or Sears or wherever around you and wire it according to that, then you are ABSOLUTELY sure it's correct.

As this is a brain teaser. If anyone is a computer software guy with a 240sx, here's is what I think happens but it a long shot.

The new Panasonic is some type of digital unit with a loaded chip with firmware. The first energization sets the firmware in action and tells something in the 240sx circuit to switch on. BUT it does not change the BIT when its switched off. 2nd energization of the unit sends the same command but as its already set it causes a reverse feed back and short circuits to ground back through the starter.

Any comments??I'm guessing but I don't want to see anyone have this same problem.

You can replace your own starter easily. Get a 240SX service manual and its a direct take-out-and-replace bolt-in and replug-the-wires. The only tough part is getting to the bolts and getting them loose. Make sure you use jackstands.

While your theory is interesting, I doubt a reputable company like Panasonic would ship a faulty product. You should call them up and complain if you really think its a problem with the head unit.
