is the smell more intense when driving? You probably have a leaking injector or fuel line. If it was a fuel line, you would possibly notice a puddle of fuel. a leaky injector will usualy stain the intake manifold around it.

it could, depends on what is leaking, if the injector isnt closing properly and is leaking fuel into the motor that will make one cyl. run rich (i had this happen after i installed a Walbro hi-flow pump). The injectors also have o-rings on them that occasionaly go bad, this leaks fuel out onto the motor, creating a stain.

Occasionally? ha, i've had my car since june 02 and have already been through three sets of o-rings. and if by "creating a stain" you mean a black, charred burn mark on the firewall from when the leak burst into flames, then you are right on the mark, at least in my case. I guess I'm just lucky.

Mine did the same thing, and i took it to my friends dad, a nissan tech for 25+ years, and his advice was a new fuel filter and plugs, and its true, runs alot better...check and see if your fuel filter is a nissan filter, if its not (like mine wasn't) its crap and replace it, and if you have anything other than NGK plugs, neplace them, these parts from Nissan was like $23 so its worth it. Does your car idle crappy, if not then its probly not the injectors, thats what i was told, so if it idles fine, then everything is fireing and your prob ok, my opionion, hope this helps:D

wow. I didnt know it was that common. Mine went bad cuz i put in a high-flow pump on the stock regulator =/. I guess that just goes to show, dont take fuel problems lightly.

Check the gas cap. Make sure it is sealing. After driving around a while, the tank should build pressure. When you open the cap, if it is sealing, then you will hear a small rush of air as you open the cap. This is one possibility.

If it is an 89, it probably is a leaking injector. SOHC 240SX KAs are notorious for having leaky injectors past ~80K miles or so (depending on numerous factors).

The injectors can leak out through the seams in the metal body, among other places. This is a common problem with the sohc injectors. Sounds like your o-rings are fine, but your injectors are shot and need to be replaced... before you burn.
