As of last night my car can't get into any gear while it's running. No matter what I do, it's staying in neutral. I decided to try and start it in first, but it jerked forward even though the clutch was down to the floor. There are no leaks in the clutch line, the slave cylinder still moves, I still have fluid, and as far as I can tell, my master is fine as well. My pedal still feels like it always did. No difference anywhere other than not being able to go into gear.

A few days previous to this happening, the clutch made a grinding / scratching noise whenever I'd get it rolling from a dead stop in first. The night before it completely going out, it'd make a grinding / scratching noise whenever the clutch pedal was depressed. So far I've read its either the throwout bearing, or the fork could've simply fell off. Someone else told me the disc is welded to the flywheel. Any other opinions? I want to do as much outside troubleshooting as I can before dropping the trans. This car was my daily driver, and I need it fixed asap. A trans shop estimated 1k minimum for a full clutch overhaul. :tisk:

Its a 1989 SOHC KA with a 5 speed swap done by the previous owner. Any help is greatly appreciated! :naughty:

first of all, you should try bleeding your clutch.

sounds like a leak to me, fill bleed and try again. Tighten it all up.

I have this VERY same problem. Last weekend I moved my car back and forth on my driveway to test out the new brakes ( I had not moved the car in like 2 years). I gave it some gas and attempted to launch it a little hard and then the exact same thing that's happening to you happened to me. It started grinding hard to get in gear, then it no longer went into any gears if the car was on, if the car is off then all the gears go in smoothly. I turned on the car with first gear and the clutch pushed it and it wanted to jerk forward. The clutch is not disengaging so im thinking either the throw out bearing is toast or the disk is bad. I have a straight clutch line and its bled and i have no leaks so I know its not that. I have a new clutch kit coming in so Im just going to replace it anyways. I think your going to have to remove the transmission to see whats up with the clutch...if your down there might as well replace it like I'm going to.

My clutch line goes straight from the master to slave as well, no damper. Other people I've talked to suggested my disk puked a spring. I've seen all the videos on youtube in which they recorded a bad TOB sound, and it sounded nothing like that was coming from my car. Look's like I'm dropping trans this weekend! Is it true that you have to loosen the motor mounts in order to do so? I've never dropped the trans before, but everyone has told me if I loosen the mounts it'll make the job a lot easier.

^yep, if you aren't pressing on it, then hydro problem.

If you are pressing the clutch and the slave is moving, then pressure plate is probably bad.

clutch feels like it always has. theres nice firm feedback like there always was, no leaks in the line, and the slave moves fine as well.

Same problem with me. I'm guessing TOB is bad, or just not greased very well.
I'm not looking forward to possibly having to drop the transmission again.

Dropped the trans today, it was definitely the disk. Check that out
Now the question is, can you mix and match the pressure plate with another disc? I kinda wanted to keep the SPEC pressure plate and just replace the disc and tob.

Ugh that worries me now. I'm using a different pressure plate and disc, I hope that's not whats causing the issue.
