You need to get a test light or multimeter and test the electromagnet connector for 12 volts when you turn the AC on. If you have 12 volts at that connector when the AC button is on and the clutch isn't engaging then the electromagnetic coil went bad. You can get them for $95 on ebay. I wrote a HOW-TO for replacing it. It is in the FAQ section.
If you don't have 12 volts at the cool, you could be low on freon (leak) which would likely be a compressor replacement, or you have a pressure cycling switch issue, or possible something as simple as a blown fuse. If you don't have at least some experience working on cars, you will need to take it in.
What was the dealer's diagnosis? I know they told you it needed a new compressor but did they ask why?
I am going to be replacing my compressor and drier this week. If you have any questions about that procedure, I can fill you in.
