I guess I lost the keys to the trunk and the switch on the drivers side isn't working! I have already check the switch in the glove box so if someone could tell me how to troubleshoot the drivers side switch it would be very helpful. Thanks!EDIT: More info I forgot;Fuses are goodIts a 1991 Q45When I pull the drivers side switch I don't even hear a noise in the trunk

Ignition key should open the trunk. You DO have an ignition key?Or is it only a "valet key", which WON'T open the trunk? If so, you need a regular ignition key.See your Infiniti dealer in that case, and bring money.

Someone else here can diagnose and suggest repair for your non-functioning door switch, but you really should have a regular ignition key anyway.

Sorry for bumping an old topic but it turns out the keys were somewhere else The key I have is just an ignition key(I can only start the car and lock the doors manually with it) and that is the only key I have for this car

But anyway... I just got my hands on a new tire+rim and now I really have to get in the trunk to keep it as a spare! Can anyone tell me how about I would troubleshoot the glove switch/door switch or some way I can get into the trunk and just rig something up in the mean time? Im pretty sure I have a multimeter somewhere around here to test the wiring.

Have someone push down and / or pullup on trunk while you try door switch.

Failure to do preventative mainteance on solenoid/latch/lock mechanicals.

Common for many to cheap out and just change ignition lock without doors, glovebox, trunk.

We once had a Q that need 4 keys to function 2 doors different from trunk or ignition.

The trunk solenoid may be positionally stressed from a bent catch why the push down, pull up works ocassionally!

Life punishes those that delay preventative mainteance or accept a Q that has jury rigged keys.

An expert experienced on Q lock smith can pick the trunk lock. Then make you a key...........................but be sure to R&R locks solenoid latch, etc before you close it.

The FSM shows where the switch connectors converge for the rear [under driverside of rear seat]. Careful you can destroy lots of rear modules by placing +12 Volts in the wrong connection.

I would go with locksmith and new key option.

WOW I guess I am SOL as I talked to quite a few dealers, some said replace the whole lock cylinder, and others said that they only have key codes up to 1996. Thanks for all the help anyway

what does your key look like?

is it the large silver key with a groove going down the middle?

or does it have a black plastic head on the key.

if your ign. and trunk key is different good luck. have someone pick it.

but if your key does not have a groove going from the tip of the key to the base, thats your problem.

good luck!

brain fart...try the key in the glove box. if it works, your trunk lock is diff. if it doesnt work, it should be the valet key and wont open the trunk or glove box with out the groove it it.

Have you registered your car with Infiniti customer service? They may be able to locate it in a few days. Can't remember if it is on OEM invoice.

Yes it is registered with them.

I tried getting into my trunk when I had first made this thread and I removed the back seat and the shelf covering the speakers which only left me a tiny space in the middle to see through. If I remove the speakers is the anyway for me to use like a clothes hanger and just get the damn thing open haha?

That is the "valet key".It will NOT open your trunk or glove compartment. You need the original "ignition keY' or a factory replacement for it.It will be a heavy silver key with a very large head with the Infiniti logo, and will have a groove running the length of the key on both sides.

If you don't have this correct key, don't want to pay the dealer to get you one, and your electric trunk release switch in the driver's door doesn't work, you're going to have to get a locksmith to open the trunk. Once open, he may be able to make you a key, but you will then have to keep TWO keys with you at all times. The locksmith isn't likely to be very cheap either. Best bet is to get the dealer to use the VIN to get you a new ignition key from Japan. Not sure, but last I heard that key is a special laser cut one, and costs around $275. Maybe someone else here has more accurate and up-to-date info.

Keep in mind that it may take you a while to get a new key made in Japan and shipped here, so the longer you wait to do it, the longer it will take you to get into the trunk to put your spare inside. Of course, while you're waiting, if you have my kind of luck, you'll get a flat and have no spare.

Life can sure be trying sometimes.

Have the EXPERT LOCKSMITH use your valet key to trace the cylinder code onto the correct Master Blank [the blank with the slot on bothsides].Where are the other 3 keys that came new with car: 2 Main and 2 valet keys?

That's assuming that they were kept track of through the transferring of ownership. Keith informed me that the Q's originally had 5 keys. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to purchase their vehicles new from the dealer.

When I received my my Q, I had a total of 3 keys. One valet, one original door/ignition, and one that only works for the ignition. Sure, I could just take the two big keys off and use the valet key to get in and out and drive, but I'm not a fan of the way it looks.

I want to get the locks and such redone so that there will only be "One key to turn them all". (A little LOTR humor) I was informed that said job will require the purchase of the Q45 lock set that runs about $500. Somewhere down the line, I think I'll get it done.

Oh...I have a valet key too. That's why I can't open the trunk with the damn key. It all makes sense. I shan't be paying $275 for the luxury of being able to open the trunk with the key though.

Is your door button working? Check the switch in the glove box. If it is off, the door button won't pop the trunk.

Couldn't a locksmith just cut a new master key from the valet key? The key is the same pattern, just no groove in the middle, right?

Check out this thread for contact info for McLocksmith...zerothread/312548

FINALLY!!!! I finally got in by making a steal rod with a hook on the end and sticking it through the storage compartment area. Now my next question is, now that I have access to the trunk how can i see if the trunk opener works?

This was mentioned but ignored above but... there is a switch to turn your trunk opening mechanism on/off for valet purposes. You did open your glove compartment and make sure the switch inside is in the "on" position before going through all this right? I know someone (my mother) who has accidentally turned it off before and didn't realize it.

It wasnt ignored, I stated in my OP that I already check the glove box switch.

Wow... that's talented! Your trunk deck cover must be missing? I know all too well what it takes to get it open that way, since I once locked myself in the trunk...

I would absolutely get the new key cut before you start messing with it, unless you're so good at getting it open by your method that you don't mind doing it again. Sometimes the "flapper" in opener mechanizm (where the trunk latch enters the body of the car) will get bent, so it doesn't move far enough over to engage the latch release. Other times the solenoid will go bad. Does it "clunk" as loudly as it used to? If not it's probably the solenoid... if so, it's probably a bent "flapper"

Good luck!

I was having problems with the 90Q and noticed that the flapper was bent toward the front of the car and was pointing up slightly. Bent it back with a pair of needlenose pliers, lubed the mechanism and it works fine.

I took the shelf and seats and all out first ofcourse if thats what you mean by cover. But I have a fix thats good for a start, I took a long brake cable from a bicycle and hooked it up to the trunk release, now it hangs through one of the holes by the spare tire!
