If you are speaking of the two oval cylinders under the front seats -- they are not Catalytic Converters. The TSB on that part was to apply a sealant and two clamps -- it did not hold up.

The proper way to fix those is to remove them and weld the side seams -- if they had the sealant done at some point ... they most likely can not be welded due to the sealant contaminating the area to be welded. My first one was fixed by the dealer so I had to replace both of them -- my subsequent Pathfinders were fixed by welding the sides and they never leaked again.

The exhaust is a weak spot on the vehicle. All of mine required some cutting and welding to fix damaged pipes -- I tried to keep the OE system in them as long as possible, but eventually the rust gets to the muffler and resonator. The parts are cheap -- under $200.00 for the back sections ... if you have to replace the two oval parts they adds another $150.00 or so -- and you have to remove the O2 sensors. The aftermarket stuff is not SS and does not last as long.

A few year ago Infiniti dealer had a complimentary inspections on my 2002 QX4, and found a few things needing repair. One of them is the left side exhaust leakage. I ignored it and passed smog check every time. This year the smog guy went under the truck and found the leak so I failed the smog check. An independent shop showed me where the left side leak is, right on the converter seam. I can feel air coming out of there. The right side also had leak but not as bad. They welded both sides for $120. Now when I start the car it is so quiet, not any more loud "vroom". Since leak is a gradual thing over 14 years I didn't notice, thinking it is like that, can't compare to Toyota (Lexus) quietness.

Before and after the repair it is like day and night.

Qx4me: They are not converters ... the converters are further forward closer to the engine. I know they look like converters -- people call them converters .. but ...they are resonators.

The OE parts are very expensive -- you did the correct thing fixing the OE part. The aftermarket replacements are straight pipes and the sound changes after installation

Thanks , I always thought those little oval like mufflers were the converters under the drivers seat. but I see yo have the real converters up father, are they made of thin meatle or thick cast? wish I had a picture of one , I wonder if that's where I still hear a slight put put noise leak. and could I get some HIgh heat JB weld on them with out welding them?

gee that's a god thing if those are replaceable with straight pipes I could run a piece of pipe there and get rid of those things that I now have patched up but if they leak in the future do it only. I still here a puff putt leak noise upward toward the front . maybe the real catalyst's are one is leaking a bit? oh what about those sensors I noticed are just before those resonators , if I put a straight pipe will it effect those sensors?

if you remove those 02 sensors will it still pass inspection? wont the engine light come on? :spitout:

Don't try and patch. Do a google search of the Pathfinder exhaust -- you will see the parts. There is a rear muffler/ resonator. and then you will see a center muffler/resonator with one pipe out the back to connect up to the rear one. This center muffler/resonator has two long bent pipes out the front that connect to those oval resonators.

The aftermarket parts for the oval resonators -- are two straight-ish pipes. Some have a bulge to them -- they have the threaded hole for the O2 sensor. The oval resonators are crimped along each side -- for whatever reason they crack ... maybe the SS gets brittle. I had mine welded -- and that fixed the problem. The pipes going to the center resonator/ muffler (on mine) got small holes in them last year. Had to replace boht the center and rear assemblies. I had previously welded the two together when the joint failed -- so I had to get the rear muffler/ resonator. The parts are cheap -- both rear are under $200.00 plus the clamps etc.
