Hi.

First time member here.

Anyway, I've got my Rogue the very first time it came out, i think late 07. It's an 08 model, and now has 40K miles.

Anyway, over the last couple weeks we've been experiencing problems with the transmission. First time, I pulled over, put the gear on P, then next thing I know it won't get our of P (engine is running, brake lights are working). Then after a few mins, it worked again...so I figured it was a glitch or something. This was like 3 months ago.

Now, my wife experienced the same with the car. It will not get out of P. I can force it and put a screwdriver or key in the "shift-lock" socket near the shift lever to get it out of P. But the moment we put it back to P, it gets locked again.....

Any suggestion what could possibly be wrong? Everything seems to be working fine on the car except for this.

The 'shift lock' system has a solenoid that will release the shifter when all of the following are true:

A) The ignition switch/key is in the ON positionB) The brake pedal is depressed

The ignition switch/key is interlocked via a cable, the brake pedal is interlocked via an electric solenoid. By inserting the key into shift lock release, you mechanically bypass everything and the shifter is allowed to work.

Either of these interlocks could be faulty. I would take it to a dealer or mechanic to have it looked at.

were you parked on any sort of "cline" without applying the handbrake FIRST!. AFAIK when you put a transmission in park on a incline or decline without putting it in park you are resting the entire car on something called a "Parking Pin" Sometimes if it is steep enough the car cannot Physically move out of park. always remember to APPLY HANDBRAKES OR EMERGENCY BRAKES BEFORE SELECTING PARK! Park is only there as a fail over choice in case the handbrake fails!

thanks for the replies. I don't park on inclines, so I guess that;s out of the possible causes. I can sometimes remove it from P, sometimes no. I thought at first it might be the heat. Or the solenoid might be defective.

Right now, i just put the key in the shift-lock and manually unlock it whenever it wouldn't let me shift out of P. I hope this doesn't damage the car. I'm bringing her for service this week.

Thanks

btw, my car is at 40K miles....so I'm out of basic warranty. Would this fall under transmission warranty, which is 60K miles?

Old post but will update in case others have the same issue.

I replaced the parking brake switch for around 30 bux shipped. It's the one found above the brake pedal. After replacing, the gear works fine again, and I disabled the workaround I did of overriding the park release.

So 138K miles and she runs great still!!
