So I was running my speaker wire throughout my car today and just as I removed the backseat and lifted the rubber insulation shroud, I find out these sheets are backed with what appears to be fiberglass. As I understand it, it's not uncommon for insulation for homes and cars to contain fibrous materials. This is definitely not good.

just another reason to take out all the seats u don't need ;-) I saw that too when I took my backseat out. I think the car looks better w/o it anyway...not like anyone could really fit back there anyway (well, I had 5 people in my 240 once counting me....it was like i was in a circus)

Well, just like with asbestos... the experts are now saying that it is probably better to just leave it alone. Removal of these materials sends more of it into the air than would ever occur naturally over it's intended life. And it doesn't just go away. The dangerous materials become microscopic dust particles that will become airborn every time you drive, open the windows, get in/out, etc etc. It will always settle back down into the fabric and become airborn over and over again. If it's there.. leave it alone... period.

it's *real* easy to do. It took me like half an hour tops and i have the worst luck when i work on cars. the carpet doesn't go *all* the way down, but even my girlfriend said it looked fine after it was done (and she's real picky about stuff like that.....she thought it was gonna look too empty). Now i think the car looks better w/o it.

NOt all fiberglass is bad for you. The dust particles can be harmful on the rough or unfinished varieties. If you work with insulation you should always use a respirator, remove and wash your clothing immediately... etc... etc. You basically want to avoid breathing in the crap that falls off and turns into dust. The problem is that removing it causes more disturbance than you would ever have in a lifetime of living with it in place.

Fibreglass can suck when your work with it. Make sure you are covered head to toe else you will get the glass shards in your skin and they itch for a long time.

BTW. My chemistry teacher in highschool was hired by a group to research asbestos's effect. They found that asbestos does not cause cancer unless you inhale smoke via smoking or 2nd hand. The carcinogen's create all sorts of new chemicals when they mix with the asbestos. However it's best to always take precaution when you handle any of the stuff.
