Hi all, just wondering what everyone else has paid to change the transmission fluid on their MO's. Mr. Lube quoted me a price of $300 (tax not included), which sounds like it might be a good deal. I'll have to call the local dealers and find out what they'd charge. List your prices and associated horror stories, if any.

DON'T LET MR. LUBE CHANGE THE FLUID UNLESS YOU WANT TO DESTROY YOUR transmission!!

You can ONLY use a special Nissan CVT fluid, any other fluid will immediately destroy the CVT, and I'm not overexaggerating here, AND it'll void the warranty so you'll be out $5000 bucks. Even if Mr. Lube can somehow manage to get their hands on the Nissan fluid (which I know they can't, Nissan doesn't sell to anyone but their certifided service departments), they still wouldn't know how to work on a CVT.

I can't stress this enough, there is no way this can work out, Mr. Lube will not be able to do the work and your $5000 CVT will need to be replaced. Nissan is the only service shop currently that can do the work, mainly because they are the only source for the fluid but also because they are familiar with the CVT transmission and are trained to service these units. Mr. Lube pays their staff minimum wage and they're barely qualified to change oil, and definatley shouldn't be allowed to touch a CVT.

Why are you thinking of getting the CVT fluid changed in the first place?

**I know you're Canadian, but I don't have a metric converter handy, so I'm writing everything in US miles.**

Just to emphasize what is mentioned above, it is true; ONLY Nissan certified technicians and service centers are qualified and have the proper fluids to service these transmissions! Even a cap-full of standard ATF will DESTROY these transmissions (don't believe us? read the many horror stores of people voiding their warranties and demolishing their $6,000 transmissions as a result of this very expensive "mistake!"). Unfortunately, for the time being, you're stuck taking it to the dealer. Also, the lifespan of this fluid cannot be compared to any "conventional" service schedule. CVT fluid is not subject to the high stresses and buildup of clutch material that causes ATF fluid to require replacement after 60,000 miles; actually, the onboard computer is supposed to determine the interval for you (bring it to your Nissan dealer; if they tell you to change it at or around 60k, bring it to another dealer for a second opinion; this stuff should last well into 120,000 miles under normal service). In the United States, a CVT flush costs around $500.

Another thing; Nissan has extended the warranty on these to 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever is sooner. This is another reason it's important to just let Nissan take care of it; what Nissan giveth, Nissan may taketh away (for improper service).

Well said. And you're right, the fluid shouldn't need to be changed until 200,000 km, depending on driving conditions. If Mr. Lube told you to change the fluid, they were basing this on conventional transmission, so chances are you don't need to replace the fluid anyway.

Bottom line, this is a no-brainer, there is only 1 source for this type of service - the story about one capful of regular transmission fluid destroying the CVT is true, so just take it to Nissan and ask if it needs to be changed, chances are you won't need to do anything.
