Don't they use an aluminum frame? If its metal, you can. I would highly suggest TIG welding if you need to, and from someone experienced.

Why do you need to weld it?

hello freak12, i think it's pot steel; it's broken at 2 or 3 spots, it has been in my garage since i closed my dealership down in 2008. now i might need it as a backup car. it still needs an ac compressor and a transmission solenoid. i'll be hitting this board up for tips there too soon .. ha!

a transmission solenoid? There's sensors on the transmission, no solenoids that I'm aware of unless there's something wacky with autos.

thisisspartta, are you not entertained? there are solenoids inside of the transmission, i did the diagnosis and one needs replacement, or maybe it's wiring

Auto transmissions do indeed have solenoids inside, at least 2 that I know of.

This thread is about a weld repair on a top frame, and yes, I have heard of a common repair being performed on a Z32 top frame, and it required welding.

sure you can weld it, even if its pot metal. make sure to TIG weld it as mentioned before, and make sure that the spots to be welded are good and pre heated with a torch if it is pot metal.

Hello i have a 300zx convertible top also. Unfortunately i was driving her to fast 1 day hit a bump that caused the laches to undo, allowing all that fast wind to catch the top and snap those cursed frame bars. In that position i demanded a fix lol. Every 300zx owner would have hated to see the convertible top slouching down with a cracked plastic window in the back! So i researched and could not find those damn frame bars. Decided to just go ahead and oder the viynal top or whatever material it and get those bars welded. Might i say i was one happy little ZX'r! Litterally 1 week after i was so gently crusing at a mild 45 MPH when suddenly whoosh a gust of wind followed by that horrifying moment when the top flys up and snaps, not to mention the embarrassment when people driving next to me pull over aw! haha All-in-All manditory that it be TIG Weld done professionally. it will work just needs to be done right play the price for it once rather than 3x to cost for something that wont last:( gl tho. ps she still sits 3 weeks after it got done broken:/
