Can you turn Open Diff. Flanges into VLSD Flanges??

I keep hearing that you can have a machinist turn your open differential stock flanges into VLSD flanges. Is this true??I thought the open diff. flanges were shorter, and the VLSD flanges were longer. I really need sum info on this. Im about to buy a 300zx VLSD, and I dont want to be stuck buying a new set of flanges.

Nope, you have to get new flanges.
