i removed my stock intercooler on my r32 for a nice fmic, which i got for dirt cheap, but then, it occured to me, can i skip an fmic and just have the piping to an air filter or something? i dont see how intercoolers are 100% necessary. I'm sure you've all see it done before. Or the turbo and instead of piping at all, just am air filter mounted straight onto the front of it. With an rb20det, theres need to be alot of piping with and fmic that is not same side.

I may not understand the concept and where everything goes just yet. If im look at this right, the fmic goes to the intake manifold, and in this picture, so that turbo inlet(what's it called?) and then, if you had a cold air intake, it would go in the other inlet, to the turbine. Does an intercooler make sure the air is rammed into the turbo?

To save weight, could you have the piping go to two square flat air filters, and are mounted so they get direct airflow in the front? saving the weight and spare of an intercooler?

Are there positives and negative of either way? I'd like to hear both sides. Which will give me less lag and such.

no offence but you need to learn how a turbocharger works...

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

read all of that learn then ask questions....

becouse a intercooler is not part of the intake of a turbo... the intercooler comes after the air is pulled into the intercool and is there to cool the charge of compressed air, law of thermodynamics(compressed air gets hot), so yes it is nessasry(sp?)... also read corky bells book "maxiumam boost" i think it is....

so you have that big screw hanging off your engine and you are seriously asking this question? Take offense or not, I am just trying to save you time and money. Take your car to a qualified shop to finish whatever you are trying to do.

You really need to get up to speed before you start messing with it then. I reccomend this book. It' dated but the fundamentals are still sound.http://www.amazon.com/Maximum-...r=8-1

I don't have this one but have heard good things.http://www.amazon.com/Street-T...r=8-3

i think from what i've read, you don't have to run an intercooler as long as you're running like 5 psi or below. but you're not doing THAT, are you?

You should always run an intercooler. There is just no good reason not to and the benefits, heck the survival of your engine are well known.
