#27 some Russian tank?

Ignorant children, that's Tienanmen Square. Chinese students rallied for democracy. A lone one stood against a tank column. Iconic.

^ No that is a very very very famous picture the rioting and harsh reaction from the chinese government is infamous. No media in China can even mention it.

Looks like someone took a peek at the answers. :poke:
:rotfl

Nice try. The only thing I had to check was the spelling of Tienanmen.

Damn. I can't believe you guys don't know that instantly. For god sake's it was only 1989!

The best part is most Chinese students are ignorant of the anonymous rebel.

No, that one scene is about has "historical" as you can get. Instantly recognizable by anyone with a clue.

Judging by the sand and the well-patrolled side, I'm saying that's a photo of the US-Mexico border. Or Israel/Palestine. I'm leaning more US-Mexico, though.

Thanks for playing!

I can help you out with a bunch of those and no I'm not cheating. Not in any order.

7 - Buddhist monk setting himself on fire to protest the Vietnam conflict - extremely famous picture, almost as famous as 12
12- which is a Saigon police officer executing a suspecting VC.
10 - Also from Vietnam, 1st Cav guys dragging a dead NVA behind an M113
19 - Looks to capture the mass exodus of refugees escaping from the war in Rwanda
9 - Also from Vietnam, refugees swimming across the Mekong Delta to escape a Napalm strike.
27 - Tianaman Square, protester blocking a Chinese army tank convoy, remember watching this on the news when I was in HS.
22,26,32,33 - I believe those are from the atrocities and the fallout of Bosnia-Herzogovina
29 - One of the single most famous pictures of the mass genocide in Somalia by General Aidid causing those not associated with him to starve to death .
25 - S. Korea - Police showing a their unique presence at yet another protest in the mid to late 90's, could be from N. Korea too

A lot of these are harder than they should be because they are in black and white.

I don't think the desert picture was a winner last year.

To be fair to all of the readers of this thread, some of the photos are extremely obscure. Like one that got disqualified last year was a picture of a kid's hand. You'd have to have been keeping up with the award to know some of them.

Nope. Protesting the persecution of Buddhists by Vietnam. Common mistake, it's ok.

That's why I looked them up. I knew most of the not so obscure ones, just didn't feel like typing that all out. I'm lazy. :)

Is it just me or is that guard in the foreground completely oblivious to what is going on right next to them. I mean it's not like vehicle vs. pedestrians are quiet accidents especially when you take into account the amount of damage on the car and the fact that there are a bunch of bodies layed out behind the car. I mean come on, the windshield is absolutely demolished.

^ I thought that was a demonstration? The bodies on the ground and everything was faked. Could be wrong. I saw a demotivational of one of them. Something like, " Excuse me you can't sleep here."

I had wondered that exact same thing when I first saw this image. The car slammed through barricades and plowed through people behind him. How can someone not turn their head??? He's not even beginning to turn it. He's just staring straight ahead with a stupid look on his face.

I was checking out this thread last night while on the cab ride home from AC. I was pretty hammered, and it was like I was watching a bad dream. I had seen quite a few of these before, but some are just horrific. I checked out the full list of images. I just can't understand why almost every single World Press Photo of the Year is like that. Are you telling me that with the tens of thousands of press photographers taking hundreds of thousands of photos a year, not one can be positive in any way?
