Well I have another post about a vibration in my car and my car feeling very slow. Actually it is slow and I have the timeslips to prove it. Anyway I think the vibration has nothing to do with the lack of acceleration and I think I found my problem. I think my turbo is bad which would make sence because my acceleration problem feels like someone closed off half of my exhaust.

Anyway, when I rev the car I hear some bad noises comming from my turbo when it decelerates. I will try to describe the noise using "vrooom" to describe the normal reving sounds of the engine. With my head under the hood and reving the engine it sounds like "vrrroooooommmm...waaaaaaa" The waaaa is comming from the turbo along with vibration. I used the handle of a hammer to hold on the heatshield because I thought that was the vibration but there is way to much vibration for the sound to be just the heatshield. So is my turbo shot? I mean my car used to feel fast and my best run at the track last night was 15.7 @ 88mph w/ a 2.2 60' I had no topend.

Time for a new turbo?

When my bearings when out in my T3/T04E 54trim I could hear it pretty loud. It sounded like the compressor wheel was grinding on the edge of the housing "because it was!" Take off your MAF to turbo hose and grab the shaft and wiggle it. If it moves noticably its shot.

Yeah I will do that at some point but that is exactly what it sounds like. Like a kid is sticking a stick into a fan. If it is blown then I guess a 15.7 1/4 mils isnt too bad.

You outta pull that pipe along with the IC pipe. Somethink may be down in there physically stoping your turbo from spinning. Especially if it sounds like a stick in fan blades....

Ok, well I checked my turbo and should I be able to move the shaft at all? If I grab the end I can wiggle it about 2mm or so, just a guess. Is it shot? Also, my oil smells like it has gas in it and my compressions reads about 145- 140-x(under strut bar)- 155. It seems a little low all around and I was expecting to find one cycl blown. Could a blown turbo be causing my low compression at all?

If you are running too rich then you will fuel soak your cylinder walls and eventually cause the rings to begin to lose their seal. If this happens then you will see a drop in compression and you will also smell gas in your oil (heavily). This sounds like it may be your problem. Do a GOOD compression check and a leakdown test as well. Your turbo will not affect your compression test. Make sure you do the test with the engine at warm operating temperature and you hold the throttle open while cranking. You also need to be sure to test all 4 cylinders. Any two cylinders that are low that are next to each other is a sign of a blown head gasket. All 4 cylinders should read within 85-90% of each other at worst. Pay more attention to variation between cylinders than actual numbers because different compression testers will read different numbers due to manufacturing tolerances.

.0022 in. to .0050 in. is the spec on turbo shaft runout on a t28. So I am sure that it is shot. I mean I know I was moving it WAY more than .005".

Well, here is my situation, I am currently in a toyota/lexus mechanics program where our final project is an engine rebuild but that is almot 2 years from now. So, hopefully my engine is either fine or can hold out till then. I will be placed in a dealership in about 2 weeks so in about a month I will have a job again. I guess right now I will get a new turbo and do another compression test or maybe talk one of my mastertech teachers to help me test it. For the turbo I wanted a Big T28 but without a job I cant afford it if my engine needs rebuilt. So I am looking into a blacktop T28 or a S15 spec T28. I will get a new turbo and then see what happens. If my engine is shot then a rebuild with just forged pistons and a metal gasket but then I will be broke untill I get a job. I will just have to wait and see how bad this whole thing is. Of course I just bought the car a few months ago and it was running great. I'm pretty pissed.
